As we move further into 2026, the digital world is becoming more complex. While technology offers incredible opportunities for our children to learn and create, it also brings new challenges—what I like to call “Digital Dragons.” These are the scams, phishing attempts, and AI-enabled frauds that target young, unsuspecting users.

Teaching our children about digital money must go hand-in-hand with teaching them about digital safety. Here is how you can help your child spot a Digital Dragon:
•The “Too Good to be True” Rule: If an online offer—like free “gaming gold” or a rare item—seems too good to be true, it almost certainly is. Dragons love to lure children with shiny, fake promises.
•Protect the Secret Key: Teach your child that their passwords and PINs are like the secret keys to their treasure chest. They should never be shared, even with “friends” online.
•Spotting the Fake: AI can now create very convincing messages. Encourage your child to always check with you before clicking a link or downloading a file, especially if it’s from someone they don’t know personally.
•The “Pause and Think” Habit: Scammers rely on urgency. By teaching your child to pause and breathe before reacting, you give them the space to use their intuition.
In our story The Magic Magpie, we explore the value of wisdom and discernment. These same values are their best shield in the digital realm. By empowering them with knowledge, we ensure they can enjoy the magic of technology without being scorched by the dragons.
