Where do children learn about money?
Here’s an uncomfortable truth: most children are never taught about money at all. They pick it up by accident. An overheard argument about bills. A throwaway comment that “money doesn’t grow on trees”. A vague sense that money is something grown-ups worry about.
By the time they reach adulthood, those accidental lessons have hardened into beliefs. And too often, those beliefs are rooted in fear, scarcity and confusion rather than confidence and possibility.
The Financial Fairy Tales exist to change that, one story at a time.
Why stories?
Children don’t learn through lectures and worksheets. They learn through stories. Stories slip past the defences, settle in the imagination and quietly shape how a child sees the world.
So instead of textbooks, we created fairy tales. Princes and trolls, magpies and gold coins, woodcutters’ sons with big dreams. Beautifully illustrated adventures that children genuinely want to read, with timeless money lessons woven gently through every page: saving, earning, generosity, enterprise and the courage to believe in your dreams.
We call it making learning about money serious fun. The fun gets children turning the pages. The serious part is what stays with them for life.
Our story
The Financial Fairy Tales is the creation of Daniel Britton, a UK author, educator and speaker.
Daniel began his career in banking and financial services, where he saw first-hand the consequences of poor financial understanding in adults. He then spent twenty years as a teacher and school leader, where he saw where it all begins: in childhood, long before anyone thinks to teach it.
Somewhere between the bank and the classroom, an idea took shape. What if the values, habits and skills of financial wellbeing could be planted early, through the kind of stories children already love?
The first book, Dreams Can Come True, was the answer. More stories followed, along with an activity book and teaching resources for schools. In 2013, Daniel was named National Enterprise Tutor of the Year by The Peter Jones Foundation, and the series has since won multiple international awards and recognition from financial education bodies in the UK and USA.
Today, The Financial Fairy Tales are enjoyed by families and schools around the world, with thousands of copies helping children grow up with healthier, happier ideas about money.
What we believe
We believe every child deserves to grow up free from financial fear. We believe money should be a tool for freedom, not a source of worry. And we believe the seeds of that freedom are best planted early, with imagination, warmth and a little bit of magic.
As The Times put it, the series is one of the most engaging and unique approaches to financial education around. Teachers use the books in classrooms from Bournemouth to Arizona. Parents tell us the stories spark conversations they never knew how to start.
